The sixth-generation (AW) Volkswagen Polo GTI, whose first Swiss vehicle type record dates from November 2017, is 5x100 on a 57.1 mm hub, with M14 x 1.5 wheel bolts tightened to 120 Nm: wheelfitment.eu, koleso.ee and SCC give these measurements, each cited in the table (koleso.ee gives no torque).
17 or 18 inches, an offset of 51
The vehicle type record of the Swiss Federal Roads Office (ASTRA), the document that sets the tyre and wheel combinations a car may carry, permits for the Polo GTI, with 147 kW and then 152 kW, the same wheel on both axles, with an offset of 51: 7.5J x 18 fitted with reinforced (XL) 215/40 R18 tyres, or 7.5J x 17 fitted with reinforced (XL) 215/45 R17 tyres. For winter, it permits a 6J x 16 wheel with an offset of 45, fitted with 185/60 R16 tyres.
A front-wheel-drive car: the front carries the most
The 2022 record gives a permissible load of 1,000 kg on the front axle and 850 kg on the rear axle, i.e. 500 and 425 kg per wheel. This is the load the front wheel must withstand, and the tyre must keep at least the load index of the original fitment (reading a tyre (page in French)).
What these measurements say about a forged wheel
The offset positions the wheel in the wheel arch: a wider wheel, or a lower offset, brings it closer to the wing. Roadworthiness test: what is examined
The French roadworthiness test (contrôle technique) examines the wheel without removing it (cracks, deformation, a wheel that protrudes beyond the bodywork) and verifies that the tyre size is one provided for by the manufacturer or accepted as equivalent. Keeping a tyre size from the original fitment, and at least its load index, avoids having to justify it; the details are on the roadworthiness test and registration page.

- The braking system, on which the smallest possible diameter depends (wheels and brakes (page in French)).
