Custom forged wheels for Land Rover Defender
The Defender is not treated like a Range Rover: it shares neither the fixing pattern of the Range Rover models, nor their use, nor their spare wheel: its own is carried on the tailgate and is therefore in full view. Add to that a roof rack that is often loaded and frequent towing. Onyx Forged starts from these constraints to design a set of forged 6061-T6 aluminium wheels, striking a balance between diameter, sidewall height and permissible load.
Land Rover Defender: original wheels, brakes and weight
The figures below come from Land Rover's documents and from the sources listed below, read on 20 October 2026. They are the standard measurements of the versions named, not a recommendation: before any design, we work out the measurements of your car.

Defender 110 “Standard”
| Wheels | option: 18-inch steel wheels instead of the 19-inch alloy wheels [2] |

At Land Rover, the brake disc depends on the version and sometimes on the wheel fitted: the same car does not take the same brake on 20-inch Style 9013 wheels. It is the brake of your Defender, not that of another version, that the wheel must accommodate.

An architecture of its own
The Defender is built on an aluminium monocoque designed for heavy-duty use, with long-travel suspension and a drivetrain conceived for tackling obstacles, not for show. It does not share the fixing pattern of the Range Rover models: a wheel advertised as “for Land Rover” with no further detail therefore means nothing, as the two families are not interchangeable. Its buyers are not the same either. A Defender is genuinely put to work: trailer, horses, building site, mountains and, now and then, a track that no longer looks like a road.
Permissible load: roof, towbar and tailgate add up
Kerb weight is never the real weight of a Defender. A roof rack, a roof tent, a full boot, the vertical load on the tow ball: each of these adds to what the wheels absorb, and the tailgate also carries a complete wheel overhanging the rear. The maximum axle weights appear on the manufacturer's plate and on the registration document; that is where the sizing starts, not from a wheel width chosen from a photo. High-pressure forging of 6061-T6 makes it possible to reach that load without piling on metal, and so without adding weight to a car that is already heavy.
Occasional off-roading changes the brief
The tyre sidewall is the wheel's first protection. Every inch of diameter gained takes some of it away, and on a stony track or a kerb taken at an angle, it is the lip of the wheel that takes the impact in its place. A forged lip withstands it better than a cast one, but no material replaces a sidewall. The diameter is therefore decided in the light of how the car is really used: for each diameter considered, we show you the sidewall height that remains and what it protects, and the choice is yours. One constraint, however, is not open to discussion: according to Land Rover's 2025 technical specification, the brake disc depends on the version, and sometimes on the wheel fitted (on a Defender 110 P300e, 363 mm at the front, 380 mm with the 20-inch Style 9013 wheels). The wheel must accommodate the brake of your Defender, not that of another version.
The tailgate spare wheel, the detail that gives away a poorly thought-out set
This is the point almost nobody addresses. On a Defender, the spare wheel is exposed in the centre of the tailgate, at eye level: a set of four wheels therefore leaves an original wheel in plain view in the middle of the new design. Two answers are possible: a fifth identical wheel, or keeping an original spare assembly as a deliberate choice. In both cases, two requirements remain: the spare wheel must remain genuinely fittable to the vehicle, and the tailgate hinge is designed for a given mass that a heavier assembly must not exceed. We discuss this before designing, not after.
What custom work allows
Monoblock for lightness, two-piece or three-piece for a barrel depth and a width that a monoblock cannot reach. Design, number of spokes, finish, visible or hidden bolts, fifth wheel as a spare: everything is decided with you. Our wheels are designed to JWL/VIA standards and 5-axis CNC machined. Price and lead time each have their own page: custom forged wheel prices and lead time. Send an inspiration photo to our configurator: it turns it into a render applied to your Defender. Start your configuration, or write to contact@onyxforgedwheels.com.
