Frequently asked questions: wheels for the Mazda MX-5 ND

What are the original offsets for the wheels of a Mazda MX-5 ND?

An offset of 45, on both axles and on all the wheels permitted by the Swiss vehicle type records: 6.5J x 16 on the 1.5, and 7J x 17 on the 2.0; since December 2022, a 7J x 16 wheel is also permitted on the 1.5. [5, 9, 13]

Which tyres, and which load index, does a Mazda MX-5 ND take?

195/50 R16 of load index 84 on the 1.5, i.e. 500 kg per tyre, and 205/45 R17 of load index 84 on the 2.0, i.e. 500 kg, on both axles. [5, 13, 18]

What is the load per wheel on a Mazda MX-5 ND?

The Swiss vehicle type record for the 135 kW 2.0 roadster gives it a permissible load of 645 kg on the front axle and 615 kg on the rear axle, i.e. 322.5 and 307.5 kg per wheel; the record for the 135 kW RF gives 635 kg at the front and 660 kg at the rear. The 205/45 R17 tyre of load index 84 carries 500 kg. [13, 14, 18]

What PCD, centre bore and nuts does a Mazda MX-5 ND use?

The PCD is 4x100, the centre bore 54.1 mm, and the wheels are held by M12 x 1.5 nuts: wheelfitment.eu, koleso.ee and SCC give these measurements; hubcentric-rings.com gives a different PCD. The tightening torque is not published: only one database gives it. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Publication rule: a measurement is shown only if a primary source gives it (a manufacturer's document, an official vehicle type record, an original parts catalogue, the maker of the original wheel) without another primary source contradicting it, or if two independent specialist sources agree without a primary source contradicting them. The press and forums do not count. Measurements checked on 21 October 2026 by the Onyx Forged design office.

MX-5 ND: 4x100, a 54.1 mm hub, M12 x 1.5 nuts

The fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 (ND), whose first Swiss vehicle type record dates from June 2015, roadster and RF alike, uses 4x100 on a 54.1 mm hub, with M12 x 1.5 wheel nuts: wheelfitment.eu, koleso.ee and SCC give these measurements, each cited in the table; hubcentric-rings.com gives a different PCD, which we do not use. The tightening torque is not published: only one database gives it, and we have not read a Mazda manual that confirms it.

16 or 17 inches, an offset of 45 throughout

The vehicle type record of the Swiss Federal Roads Office (ASTRA), the document that sets the tyre and wheel combinations a car may carry, permits the same wheel on both axles of the MX-5, always with an offset of 45. The 1.5 runs on a 6.5J x 16 wheel with 195/50 R16 tyres; since the December 2022 records, a 7J x 16 wheel is also permitted. The 2.0 runs on a 7J x 17 wheel with 205/45 R17 tyres, and the 118 kW 2.0 also permitted the 16-inch wheel. A wider wheel or a lower offset brings the wheel closer to the wing, on a car whose wheel arches are tight.

A light car: the load per wheel

The record for the 135 kW 2.0 roadster gives it a permissible load of 645 kg on the front axle and 615 kg on the rear axle, i.e. 322.5 and 307.5 kg per wheel; the RF carries a little more at the rear (660 kg). That is the load the wheel must carry, and the tyre must keep at least the load index of the original fitment, 84 (reading a tyre (page in French)).

What these measurements say about a forged wheel

The offset positions the wheel in the wheel arch: a wider wheel, or a lower offset, brings it closer to the wing. The Onyx Forged design office starts from the measurements on this page, your brakes and your tyres to calculate the width and offset of your wheels, then submits them to you. The offset calculator compares two fitments: it compares, it does not choose the measurement for you.

Roadworthiness test: what is examined

The French roadworthiness test (contrôle technique) examines the wheel without removing it (cracks, deformation, a wheel that protrudes beyond the bodywork) and verifies that the tyre size is one provided for by the manufacturer or accepted as equivalent. Keeping a tyre size from the original fitment, and at least its load index, avoids having to justify it; the details are on the roadworthiness test and registration page.

What we record before machining

Configure your forged wheels for the Mazda MX-5 (ND)

The Onyx Forged design office works out the measurements of your car from its exact version, stated on the registration document, and shows them to you before machining. Each set is cut from forged 6061-T6 aluminium, machined on a 5-axis CNC centre, as monoblock, two-piece or three-piece wheels; our wheels are designed to JWL/VIA standards. Prices by diameter and the lead time are given on this page, under “What Onyx can make”. Start your configuration or write to contact@onyxforgedwheels.com.
