Custom forged wheels for Ferrari 488

The 488 is the most common modern Ferrari in France, and the one whose original equipment wheels have done the most mileage: kerbs, carbon brake dust, winters on salted roads. Onyx Forged makes a complete new set in 6061-T6 aluminium, forged then 5-axis CNC machined, to the measurements recorded on your car. You decide the design, the width and the finish; the offset is calculated by the Onyx Forged design office, which submits it to you.

Custom forged wheels for the Ferrari 488

  • Forged 6061-T6 aluminium
  • 5-axis CNC machining
  • Designed to JWL/VIA standards
  • Fitment worked out for your Ferrari 488

A mid-mounted twin-turbo V8, and wheels that do different jobs

The 488 places its 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8 behind the cabin. The consequence for the wheels is immediate and visible to the naked eye: the rear axle carries most of the mass and puts the power down, while the front axle only steers. Hence a markedly staggered fitment, much wider at the rear than at the front, which is not a styling effect but the direct expression of the layout. Any work on the wheels of a 488 starts from there. Widening the front “to balance it visually” means working against a balance that Maranello has set, and the price is heavier steering and blunted response on turn-in.

Making a new set, or refurbishing the original one

This is the real question on a used 488, and it deserves an honest answer. An original wheel that is simply scuffed on its edge can be refurbished: it costs less, and it keeps the car in its standard condition. On the other hand, as soon as a wheel centre has taken a pothole, or a previous refurbishment has already removed material from the flange, repainting only postpones the problem. A new forged set is then the opportunity to deal with two issues at once: the condition, and the width or finish you have never had. Our standing recommendation remains the same: keep the original set, in good condition, in a corner of the garage. It is worth something on the day you sell.

The calipers dictate the inner design

On a 488 fitted with carbon-ceramic brakes, the calipers take up a volume that many catalogue designs ignore. It is not only a matter of radial clearance: it is the inner face of the spokes that must be recessed in the right place, on the right radius, otherwise the wheel ends up a few tenths of a millimetre from the caliper — in other words, it does not fit at all. This clearance is established for the exact version of your car, it cannot be deduced from a generic table, and it shapes the design well before aesthetics come in. Ventilation adds to this: a wheel centre that is too closed thermally insulates brakes that need a flow of air, especially on a car driven on track days.

An Onyx design, fitted to the 488

Custom-made does not mean copying the standard wheel. You start from an Onyx design, a model from the catalogue or a design developed with the Onyx Forged design office, and that is what is adjusted to the car. Three adjustments do the work. First, the finish, which decides how the wheel reads against the bodywork. Next, the width: a few millimetres more at the rear to sit neatly flush with the wing, without working against the staggered fitment. Finally, the depth, of the face and of the barrel, set according to the calipers and the chosen offset. The original centre cap can be kept, provided the new profile leaves room for it to close — this is checked at the design stage, not on delivery.

Configure your Ferrari 488 wheels

Our configurator starts from a simple inspiration photo — a wheel spotted at a car meet, on another car, in a magazine — and produces a render of it applied to your model. The design is then reworked with the Onyx Forged design office, then 5-axis CNC machined. Our wheels are designed to JWL/VIA standards. Start your configuration or write to contact@onyxforgedwheels.com.
