Two cars under one code

The RS3 8V covers two quite distinct periods. Launched in 2015 with a 367 PS 2.5-litre five-cylinder, it moved to 400 PS and 480 Nm with the 2017 facelift, which also brought a saloon body alongside the Sportback. Production ended in 2020, when the next generation arrived. An 8V weighs about 1,515 kg: it is a compact car, and it is treated as one. The load reasoning applied to a two-tonne estate has no relevance here: what counts is how the lip withstands impacts and the precision of the front axle.

A staggered fitment, but not the 8Y's

On the staggered original configurations, the 8V has 255/30 ZR19 at the front on an 8.5J x 19 wheel, and 235/35 ZR19 at the rear on 8J x 19; other original configurations use 235/35 R19 on all four wheels. Here again, the front is the wider axle, which is consistent for a transverse five-cylinder. But the widths and offsets of the 8V are not those of the 8Y: the two generations do not share their wheels, despite an identical 5x112 PCD (bolt pattern) and 57.1 mm centre bore.

Why we do not publish an original offset

It is the only figure we refuse to give you. The offsets recorded on the 8V differ according to the body, the model year and the wheel package chosen when the car was ordered, and the gap between the values found is enough to visibly change how flush the wheel sits with the wing. Publishing an average value would mean giving you false information in one case out of two, on the very measurement you came to check. So we establish your car's offset, from its VIN, axle by axle, before the first line is drawn.

What ten years of use change for the project

The PCD is 5x112, the centre bore 57.1 mm, the fixing is by M14 x 1.5 bolts, and the original diameter is 19 inches. An 8V is now a used car: 30 or 35 profile sidewalls as standard, original wheels often kerbed, tired lacquer, and a part number that can no longer easily be replaced on its own. High-pressure forging of 6061-T6 brings two concrete things here: better resistance to lip impacts than a cast wheel of equivalent mass, and the possibility of having an identical wheel made later, since the design remains yours.

On an 8V, the choice of process is decided first at the front: it is the loaded axle, the one that carries the five-cylinder and puts down the power, and the one the original fitment widens. A monoblock wheel there removes unsprung mass where it weighs most; a two-piece or three-piece wheel opens up barrel depth and makes the lip removable, which is useful on a compact car that is parked in town.
