Frequently asked questions: wheels for the BMW M3 E46

What PCD and centre bore does a BMW M3 E46 have?

5x120 according to SCC, wheelfitment.eu and koleso.ee, with M12 x 1.5 wheel bolts. The centre bore is 72.6 mm according to SCC and koleso.ee; wheelfitment.eu gives it one tenth of a millimetre smaller: we adopt the value given by two groups of sources against one. [1, 2, 3]

What are the original fitments of a BMW M3 E46?

For summer, BMW M gives for the 2005 model year M3 Coupé: 8J x 18, IS 47, with 225/45 ZR18 at the front and 9J x 18, IS 26, with 255/40 ZR18 at the rear; or 8J x 19, IS 47, with 225/40 ZR19 at the front and 9.5J x 19, IS 27, with 255/35 ZR19 at the rear. IS is the offset in BMW's sheets. [4]

Are the M3 E46's original 19-inch wheels forged?

Yes for the 67M wheel: the BMW M sheet describes it in 8J x 19 and 9.5J x 19 as a forged wheel (“LM-Schmiederad”). The 18-inch version of the same 67M is a cast wheel (“LM-Gußrad”), and the 163M, also in 8J x 19 and 9.5J x 19, is cast too. [4]

Publication rule: a measurement is shown only if a primary source gives it (a manufacturer's document, an official vehicle type record, an original parts catalogue, the maker of the original wheel) without another primary source contradicting it, or if two independent specialist sources agree without a primary source contradicting them. The press and forums do not count. Measurements checked on 15 October 2026 by the Onyx Forged design office.

M3 E46: 5x120, M12 bolts and a 72.6 mm centre bore

The BMW M3 E46, produced from 2000 to 2006 according to SCC and koleso.ee, is 5x120, on a 72.6 mm hub, with M12 x 1.5 wheel bolts: three independent specialist sources give the PCD (bolt pattern) and the thread, each cited in the table. For the centre bore, one of the three databases gives 72.5 mm: the difference is one tenth of a millimetre, which the Onyx Forged design office settles for your car. The tightening torque is not published: the databases do not agree and no BMW document we have read gives it; keep to the one in your car's manual.

A staggered fitment, 18 or 19 inches

The BMW M sheet for the 2005 model year gives a staggered fitment for the M3 Coupé, wider at the rear than at the front. In 18 inches: 8J x 18 with an offset (IS) of 47 at the front, 9J x 18 with an offset of 26 at the rear. In 19 inches: 8J x 19 with an offset of 47 at the front, 9.5J x 19 with an offset of 27 at the rear. A front wheel and a rear wheel are therefore never interchangeable.

Forged or cast: the 67M and 163M wheels

In its sheet, BMW M describes the 67M wheel in 19 inches as a forged wheel, and the same 67M in 18 inches as a cast wheel. The 163M, which has the same widths and the same offsets as the 67M in 19 inches, is cast. We identify the wheel your M3 has, if need be from a photo of the fitted wheel, before sizing anything at all.
