Frequently asked questions: wheels for the BMW M3 F80

What are the original offsets on an M3 F80?

The same on all summer fitments: 29 mm at the front, 40 mm at the rear, in 18, 19 and 20 inches (9J and 10J). BMW winter wheels are 8.5J ET 27 at the front and 9J ET 29 at the rear. [7, 8, 9]

Do carbon-ceramic brakes impose a minimum diameter on the M3 F80?

Yes: BMW excludes 18-inch wheels with carbon-ceramic brakes (CSiC). The minimum is 19 inches. [7, 8]

Can snow chains be fitted to an M3 F80?

Not with the summer fitments: BMW states “keine Schneeketten zulässig” for all summer wheels of the F80/F82/F83 family. [7, 8]

Publication rule: a measurement is shown only if a primary source gives it (a manufacturer's document, an official vehicle type record, an original parts catalogue, the maker of the original wheel) without another primary source contradicting it, or if two independent specialist sources agree without a primary source contradicting them. The press and forums do not count. Measurements checked on 10 October 2026 by the Onyx Forged design office.

5x120: the PCD (bolt pattern) the G80 abandoned

The M3 F80 is drilled 5x120. It is the PCD shared by the whole F8x family: M4 F82 and F83, M2 F87. It is no longer that of the M3 G80, which moved to 5x112. In other words, the wheels of your F80 will never go on the following generation, and vice versa. It is a point to take into account before buying a second set, and it is also what explains the depth of the used market in 5x120, fed by twenty years of BMWs on E and F chassis.

Offsets that stay the same from one diameter to the next

The F80 has a convenient feature: its three original fitments share exactly the same offsets, 29 mm at the front and 40 mm at the rear. In 18 inches, it comes with 9J at the front on 255/40 R18 tyres and 10J at the rear on 275/40 R18. The optional 19-inch wheel (the double-spoke 437M, the most common wheel on the cars on the road) keeps these widths with 255/35 and 275/35. The Competition package adds a 20-inch wheel, the 666M, with 265/30 R20 and 285/30 R20. This consistency has a practical consequence: on an F80, a change of diameter does not alter the track width, which is not true of every BMW.

A twin-turbo six-cylinder that delivers its torque very early

The S55 delivers its maximum torque from low revs and holds it over a wide range. On a rear-wheel-drive car, the rear axle pays for this: it has to put the power down, and the rear wheel works in traction as much as in guidance. The rear width is therefore not a styling choice; it is the expression of an architecture. Widening the front to “balance” an F80 visually works against the car's original set-up, and the price is heavier steering. We start from the recorded measurements, then we change what does not betray the car.

Wheels with ten years on the road behind them

The F80 is now a used car, and its original equipment wheels have seen plenty of use: kerbed edges, wheel faces that have taken potholes, lips already reworked by a refurbishment that removed material. A wheel that is only scratched can be refurbished, and that is often the right call. As soon as a wheel face has taken a knock or a repair has been pushed too far, repainting only postpones the problem. A new forged set then deals with the condition and the width in one go. Keep the original set in good condition: it counts at resale.
