Which wheel for a BMW M: the generation first

A BMW wheel is chosen by generation, which BMW designates by a code: G80 for the M3 since 2020, F80 for the one from 2014 to 2018, G82 and F82 for the corresponding M4s, F90 for the M5 from 2017 to 2023. It is the generation that sets the PCD (bolt pattern), the centre bore, the bolts and the original fitments. The production years of these generations do not overlap: the year of your car is enough to tell an F80 from a G80.

The original measurements we have recorded for BMW M cars are published generation by generation, on the page for the M2 G87, the M2 F87, the M3 G80, the M3 F80, the M4 G82, the M4 F82 and the M5 F90, and for the SUVs X3 M (F97), X4 M (F98), X5 M (F85) and X6 M (F86); those of the electric i4 M50 (G26) are on its own page: each measurement there cites its source.

PCD, centre bore and bolts: two families among the BMW M cars recorded

On the BMW M cars we have recorded, the PCD is 5x112 for the M3 G80, M4 G82 and M5 F90, and 5x120 for the M3 F80 and M4 F82: wheels cannot be swapped from one family to the other. The centre bore is 66.5 mm on the G80 and G82 and 66.6 mm on the F90, a difference of a tenth of a millimetre that is measured on the hub; it is not published for the F80 and F82, for lack of a sufficient source. These five BMW M cars take M14 x 1.25 bolts; the older M3 E46 takes M12 x 1.5 bolts.

The same PCD is not enough: the centre bore, the bolt thread, the brakes and the original fitment also count. The 5x112 PCD page sets side by side the cars that share it. An Onyx wheel is machined to the PCD and centre bore of the car it is made for: it centres on the hub with no ring or spacer.

Which wheel size for a BMW M

As original equipment, these five BMW M cars run on 18, 19 or 20-inch wheels depending on the version, and on 19 or 20-inch wheels for the M5 F90. The diameter is not chosen on its own: with carbon-ceramic brakes, BMW excludes 18 inches on the M3 F80 and the M4 F82, and the minimum becomes 19 inches. This is one of the reasons why the Onyx Forged design office calculates the width and offset for your car and your brakes, and submits them to you before machining.

To compare two fitments before ordering, first read the size of your tyre (reading a tyre (page in French)), then use the tyre size equivalence to confirm that the rolling circumference stays close, and the wheel offset calculator to compare the position of two wheels in the wheel arch: the tool compares, it does not recommend any offset. A guide explains what the diameter changes (page in French).

Why a forged wheel on a BMW M

An Onyx forged wheel is 5-axis CNC machined from a block of forged 6061-T6 aluminium, instead of being cast in a mould. What sets it apart from a cast or flow formed wheel, and what this changes for weight and strength, is explained in forged, cast or flow formed. Price and lead time each have their own page: custom forged wheel prices and lead time.

Frequently asked questions about BMW wheels

Which wheel size for my BMW?

The one for your generation and your version. For example, BMW France delivered the rear-wheel-drive M3 Competition (G80) in 2021 with 18 inches at the front and 19 inches at the rear, and the M xDrive with 19 and 20 inches, according to its price list. The size is shown on the sidewall of your tyres; the original fitments, version by version, are on the page for your generation: M2 G87, M2 F87, M3 G80, M3 F80, M4 G82, M4 F82, M5 F90, X3 M F97, X4 M F98, X5 M F85, X6 M F86, i4 M50, M240i G42, M340i G20 and G21 and M440i G22 and G23.

What is the PCD of a BMW?

It depends on the generation. On the BMW M cars recorded, it is 5x112 for the M3 G80, M4 G82 and M5 F90, and 5x120 for the M3 F80 and M4 F82. The sources for each value are cited on the car's page; the 5x112 PCD page lists the cars that share the former.

Is the same PCD enough to fit a wheel on another car?

No. The centre bore must suit as well: a centre bore smaller than the hub will not go on, and a larger centre bore is centred with a ring. The bolt thread, the brakes and the original fitment also count. The lesson PCD and centring explains how to read these measurements.

Do forged wheels for a BMW have an approval of their own, and do they pass the roadworthiness test?

No: made individually, Onyx wheels have no individual approval of their own, and we say so before you order. They are designed to JWL/VIA standards. The French roadworthiness test (contrôle technique) examines the wheel without removing it (cracks, deformation, a wheel that sticks out beyond the bodywork) and checks that the tyre size is provided for by the manufacturer or accepted as equivalent; it neither validates nor rejects a modification, which is a matter for vehicle approval (réception) and the registration document. The details, country by country, are on the roadworthiness test and registration document page.

How much do forged wheels for a BMW cost?

The price of a custom forged wheel depends on its diameter and its construction: the price grid for monoblock and 2-piece wheels is published diameter by diameter, 3-piece wheels are priced on quotation, and the finish does not change the price. The details are on the custom forged wheel prices page, and the lead time on the lead time page.

Monoblock, 2-piece or 3-piece: what is the difference?

A monoblock wheel is machined from a single forged block; a 2-piece wheel assembles a forged centre and a barrel; a 3-piece wheel holds the centre between an outer barrel and an inner barrel. Each construction has its own page, monoblock, 2-piece and 3-piece, and the guide monoblock, 2-piece or 3-piece (page in French) compares them.

What if my BMW is not on the list?

An Onyx wheel is designed around the measurements of the car it goes on. Enter your model and its model year in the configurator: we record your car's measurements and submit them to you before machining.

PCD, centre bore, thread, diameters and original offsets: the BMW cars we cover

One row per generation. Each value is taken from the car's page, which cites the source of each measurement, its fitments version by version and their original offsets (manufacturer). When a PCD has its own page, it leads there: that page lists every car that shares it.

“—”: measurement not published for lack of a sufficient source. The diameters and offsets are those of the original fitments, all versions together: the car's page gives the fitment of each version. These measurements help you recognise your car; they are not a recommendation, and Onyx does not advise any specific offset.

Onyx entry price: the set of four monoblock forged wheels in the smallest diameter of our price list that covers the smallest original diameter recorded; the other diameters and the two-piece construction are on each generation's page. Amounts in pounds: our checkout on 4 October 2026, before the carrier's clearance fee and any import duty. The amount shown at checkout is the one charged for your order.

Publication rule: a measurement is shown only if a primary source gives it (a manufacturer's document, an official vehicle type record, an original parts catalogue, the maker of the original wheel) without another primary source contradicting it, or if two independent specialist sources agree without a primary source contradicting them. The press and forums do not count. Measurements checked on 21 October 2026.
