Fitment: the position that changes everything

You are now in the most creative part of the Academy: style. And the first secret of style, the one that true enthusiasts master, has a name: fitment. It is what explains why two identical cars, with wheels of the same size, can give a radically different impression.

What is fitment?

Fitment is the art of positioning the wheel relative to the bodywork. In other words: how your wheels fill (or do not fill) the wheel arches, and where they sit relative to the edge of the wing.

It is the combination of everything you have learnt: the width, the offset, the diameter, which together determine the “stance” of your car.

A good fitment is what makes people say “this car sits perfectly”, even without knowing why.

The main types of fitment

There are three main ways of positioning your wheels. Each one tells a different story.

Tucked fitment: the wheel is set back, clearly inside the wheel arch. There is a lot of space left between the wheel and the edge of the wing. A discreet look, sometimes too “empty”, it is often the most conservative original set-up.

Flush fitment: the wheel fills the arch perfectly, the edge of the wheel comes almost level with the wing. It is the most sought-after balance: athletic, clean, elegant. The car looks “carved from a single block”.

Aggressive fitment: the wheel is level with the wing or sticks out slightly beyond it, for a very distinctive, sporty and imposing look. Spectacular, but it takes real technical mastery to keep the car drivable.

Why fitment makes all the difference

You can have the most beautiful wheels in the world: badly positioned, they spoil the look. Conversely, a perfectly mastered fitment enhances even a simple design.

That is exactly what sets a car “with nice wheels” apart from a car with real presence. Fitment is the finishing touch, the one that turns a car into a statement.

The right fitment is a balance

Be careful: an overly aggressive fitment can cause rubbing, tyre wear, or compromises in comfort and safety. The aim is not to go to the extreme, but to find THE position that enhances your car while remaining perfectly usable every day.

This calculation depends on your exact model, your wheel arches, your preferences. That is the whole art of made-to-measure.

In the next lesson, we explore the concave profile: that effect of depth in the design of the wheel that fascinates so many people.

The Onyx approach — Fitment is at the heart of what we do. During your project, we talk through the look you are after (discreet, flush, assertive), then we calculate the exact dimensions to achieve it on your car, with no compromise on safety. Your car, sitting perfectly. That is the whole Onyx signature.
