Frequently asked questions: wheels for the BMW X3 M F97
What are the original offsets for the wheels of a BMW X3 M (F97)?
A staggered fitment, according to its Swiss vehicle type records: 9.5J x 21 with an offset of 31 at the front and 10J x 21 with an offset of 39 at the rear, or 9J x 20 with an offset of 28 and 10J x 20 with an offset of 39. For winter, 9J x 20 at the front and 9.5J x 20 at the rear, at the same offsets, on the X3 M and the X3 M Competition alike. [7, 12]
Which tyres, and which load index, does a BMW X3 M (F97) take?
In 21 inches, 255/40 R21 with load index 102 at the front, i.e. 850 kg per tyre, and 265/40 R21 with load index 105 at the rear, i.e. 925 kg; in 20 inches, 255/45 R20 with load index 105 and 265/45 R20 with load index 108, i.e. 1000 kg at the rear. For winter, 255/45 R20 with load index 105 on both axles. [7, 12, 13]
What is the load per wheel on a BMW X3 M (F97)?
Its Swiss vehicle type records give it a permissible load of 1,185 kg on the front axle and 1,425 kg on the rear axle, i.e. 592.5 and 712.5 kg per wheel, in both the 353 and the 375 kW versions: the rear carries the most. The 265/40 R21 rear tyre with load index 105 carries 925 kg. [7, 12, 13]
What PCD, centre bore and bolts does a BMW X3 M (F97) use?
The PCD is 5x112, the centre bore 66.6 mm, and the wheels are held by M14 x 1.25 bolts tightened to 140 Nm: wheelfitment.eu, koleso.ee and SCC give these measurements; ThreePiece.us and tirewheelguide.com give the PCD, the centre bore and the thread. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]
Same fixing measurements
As original equipment, these cars have the same PCD, centre bore, thread and fixing as the BMW X3 M F97: PCD 5x112, centre bore 66.6 mm, thread M14 x 1.25, fixing: wheel bolts.

Publication rule: a measurement is shown only if a primary source gives it (a manufacturer's document, an official vehicle type record, an original parts catalogue, the maker of the original wheel) without another primary source contradicting it, or if two independent specialist sources agree without a primary source contradicting them. The press and forums do not count. Measurements checked on 21 October 2026 by the Onyx Forged design office.

Custom forged wheels for the BMW X3 M F97
- Forged 6061-T6 aluminium
- 5-axis CNC machining
- Designed to JWL/VIA standards
- Fitment worked out for your BMW X3 M F97
X3 M (F97): 5x112, a 66.6 mm hub, M14 x 1.25 bolts at 140 Nm
The F97-generation BMW X3 M, as the 353 kW X3 M and as the 375 kW X3 M Competition, whose first Swiss vehicle type records date from April 2019, is 5x112 on a 66.6 mm hub, with M14 x 1.25 wheel bolts tightened to 140 Nm: wheelfitment.eu, koleso.ee and SCC give these measurements, and ThreePiece.us and tirewheelguide.com the PCD (bolt pattern), the centre bore and the thread, each cited in the table. These are the hub measurements and fitments of the X4 M (F98), its counterpart with the sloping roofline.
A staggered fitment, in 20 or 21 inches
The vehicle type record of the Swiss Federal Roads Office (ASTRA), the document that sets the tyre and wheel combinations a car may carry, permits for the X3 M, before and after the July 2021 facelift, a staggered fitment, wider at the rear: 9.5J x 21 with an offset of 31 at the front and 10J x 21 with an offset of 39 at the rear, with 255/40 R21 and 265/40 R21 tyres, or 9J x 20 with an offset of 28 and 10J x 20 with an offset of 39, with 255/45 R20 and 265/45 R20 tyres. For winter, it permits 9J x 20 at the front and 9.5J x 20 at the rear, with 255/45 R20 tyres. The record lists the two front wheels in one field and the two rear wheels in the next; the table pairs them in that order, as for the M2 G87, which shares this format.
A heavy SUV: the rear carries the most
The record gives a permissible load of 1,185 kg on the front axle and 1,425 kg on the rear axle, i.e. 592.5 and 712.5 kg per wheel: the more heavily loaded axle takes the wider wheel. That is the load the wheel must carry, and the rear tyre must keep at least the load index of the original fitment, 105 for 265/40 R21 (reading a tyre (page in French)); the guide heavy SUV wheels and load per wheel (page in French) details the calculation.
What these measurements say about a forged wheel
The offset positions the wheel in the wheel arch: a wider wheel, or a lower offset, brings it closer to the wing. The Onyx Forged design office starts from the measurements on this page, your brakes and your tyres to calculate the width and offset of your wheels, then submits them to you. The offset calculator compares two fitments: it compares, it does not choose the measurement for you.
Roadworthiness test: what is examined
The French roadworthiness test (contrôle technique) examines the wheel without removing it (cracks, deformation, a wheel that protrudes beyond the bodywork) and verifies that the tyre size is one provided for by the manufacturer or accepted as equivalent. Keeping a tyre size from the original fitment, and at least its load index, avoids having to justify it; the details are on the roadworthiness test and registration page.
What we record before machining
- The exact version, stated on the registration document, and the current diameter of your wheels.
- The braking system, on which the smallest possible diameter depends (wheels and brakes (page in French)).
- The current fitment, axle by axle, and the 66.6 mm hub bore.
Configure your forged wheels for the BMW X3 M (F97)
The Onyx Forged design office works out the measurements of your car from its exact version, stated on the registration document, and shows them to you before machining. Each set is cut from forged 6061-T6 aluminium, machined on a 5-axis CNC centre, as monoblock, two-piece or three-piece wheels; our wheels are designed to JWL/VIA standards. Prices by diameter and the lead time are given on this page, under “What Onyx can make”. Start your configuration or write to contact@onyxforgedwheels.com.
