Custom forged wheels for Mercedes A 45 AMG

The A 45 is, with the CLA 45, one of the two AMG models in this selection with a transverse engine: high original offset, short wheelbase, modest track widths. What works on a rear-wheel-drive car does not carry over to it. Onyx Forged has each set forged from a block of 6061-T6 aluminium, 5-axis CNC machined, to the actual measurements of your car. Of the AMG models we equip, it is also the one that weighs least: every kilo taken off the wheels is felt more there than elsewhere.

A transverse architecture, measurements of its own

The A 45 shares its platform with the brand's compact cars, not with the rear-wheel-drive AMG models. Its turbocharged four-cylinder is mounted transversely, its all-wheel drive sends torque to the rear through a dedicated system, and the whole package fits within a short wheelbase. In practice, the original offset is markedly higher than on a rear-wheel-drive car, and the space available behind the wheel face markedly more constrained. A design conceived for a rear-wheel-drive car does not carry over: it has to be reworked around these measurements.

Offset, the main constraint on the A 45

On a transverse architecture, the original offset is high: the wheel sits well inboard of its mounting face. Many owners want to reduce it to widen the track and fill the wings. This is possible, but the A 45 leaves little margin. The suspension strut and the front caliper are close, and the wing quickly makes contact under compression, especially if the car is lowered. We establish this margin before designing, on your car's measurements and tyre fitment, rather than discovering it at fitting.

On the car that weighs least, mass counts for more

The A 45 weighs several hundred kilos less than a G 63 and remains lighter than a recent C 63. On a light car, unsprung mass represents a larger fraction of the whole: what you take off the wheels is felt proportionally more than elsewhere. High-pressure forging of 6061-T6 allows exactly that, a lighter wheel for equal strength, because the structure of the metal is realigned and freed of the porosity of casting. On a short wheelbase, where body movements are quick, the suspension benefits from working against less inertia.

Diameter, where looks and wheelbase pull against each other

Moving up a diameter is the first request on this model, and the one that most often backfires on its owner. A short wheelbase, shorter tyre sidewalls and uneven French roads make an uncomfortable combination. The visual gain is real; it is paid for in how well road irregularities are filtered out and in exposure to impacts.
