The Volkswagen Touareg R, a plug-in hybrid of the CR generation, whose first Swiss vehicle type record dates from December 2020, is 5x112 on a 66.6 mm hub, with M14 x 1.5 wheel bolts tightened to 180 Nm: wheelfitment.eu and koleso.ee give these measurements for the CR-generation Touareg, koleso.ee naming the R, and tirewheelguide.com the PCD (bolt pattern), the centre bore and the thread, each cited in the table. SCC gives a centre bore of 66.5 mm and a torque of 125 Nm, the figure for the bolt in its own kit: we do not use them.
19 or 20 inches, the same wheel on both axles
The vehicle type record of the Swiss Federal Roads Office (ASTRA), the document that sets the tyre and wheel combinations a car may carry, permits for the Touareg R the same wheel on both axles: in 19 inches, 8J or 8.5J with an offset of 28, fitted with 255/55 R19 tyres; in 20 inches, 9J with an offset of 33, fitted with 285/45 R20 tyres. For winter, it permits M+S tyres on the same wheels. These records, from December 2020 to July 2022, apply to the pre-facelift Touareg R; we have read neither a record for the facelifted R nor a document giving its larger-diameter fitments: the Onyx Forged design office establishes those of your car from its registration document or VIN.
A heavy hybrid SUV: the load per wheel
The records give a permissible load of 1,450 kg on the front axle, 1,460 kg from January 2022, and 1,610 kg on the rear axle, i.e. 725 to 730 kg and 805 kg per wheel. This is the load the wheel must withstand, and the tyre must keep at least the load index of the original fitment, 108 for 285/45 R20 (reading a tyre (page in French)); the guide heavy SUV wheels and load per wheel (page in French) sets out the calculation.
What these measurements say about a forged wheel
The offset positions the wheel in the wheel arch: a wider wheel, or a lower offset, brings it closer to the wing. The Onyx Forged design office starts from the measurements on this page, your brakes and your tyres to calculate the width and offset of your wheels, then submits them to you. The offset calculator compares two fitments: it compares, it does not choose the measurement for you.
Roadworthiness test: what is examined
The French roadworthiness test (contrôle technique) examines the wheel without removing it (cracks, deformation, a wheel that protrudes beyond the bodywork) and verifies that the tyre size is one provided for by the manufacturer or accepted as equivalent. Keeping a tyre size from the original fitment, and at least its load index, avoids having to justify it; the details are on the roadworthiness test and registration page.
