The concave profile: the fascinating effect of depth

There are wheels you look at, and wheels that stop you in your tracks. Often, what makes the difference is an effect that is hard to name at first: a sense of depth, of relief, almost of a carved object. This phenomenon has a precise name, the concave profile, and it is one of the most powerful aesthetic secrets of wheel design.

What is a concave profile?

The concave profile is the way the spokes of the wheel dip inwards, creating a hollow, a depth between the outer edge of the wheel and its centre.

A flat wheel has its spokes lined up on the same plane: the design sits on the surface. A concave wheel has spokes that sink towards the hub, creating relief and a play of light and shadow.

Think of the difference between a drawing on a sheet of paper and a carving in three dimensions. The concave profile is what takes the wheel from drawing to carving.

Why this effect is so sought after

The concave profile catches the eye for a simple reason: it plays with light. When the spokes dip, they create shadows, reflections, a depth that changes with the angle and with the path of the sun.

A concave wheel seems alive. It looks more technical, more elaborate, more upmarket. It is an effect found on sports cars and supercars, where every detail counts.

Degrees of concave profile

A concave profile is not all or nothing: it is a matter of degree.

Flat or slight profile: the spokes are almost on the same plane. A clean, classic look, elegant in its restraint.

Medium concave: the spokes dip visibly, creating fine relief without excess. The most versatile balance, elegant and dynamic.

Deep concave: the spokes sink deep towards the centre, for a spectacular, very sculptural effect. It is the most impressive look, the signature of the most exclusive projects.

What makes a concave profile possible

Here is an important point: a wheel's concave profile is closely linked to its dimensions, in particular its width and its offset. To achieve a fine, deep concave profile, there must be enough depth available, which depends on the configuration of the wheel and of the car.

In other words, a concave profile is not just an aesthetic choice made on paper: it is the result of a precise calculation. The more finely the offset and the width are worked out, the more the desired relief can be sculpted.

That is why the finest concave profiles are found on made-to-measure wheels: they are designed to reveal that relief on a specific car.

The art of depth

The concave profile is the sculptural soul of a wheel. It is what turns a metal circle into a part with character, what catches the light and makes people turn to look at a car.

Now that you know how to recognise it, you will see it everywhere, and you will understand instantly why some wheels fascinate you more than others.

In the last lesson of this module, we tackle a choice as personal as it is crucial: colour, and how never to get it wrong.

The Onyx approach — The concave profile is one of the elements we work on with the greatest care. Depending on the profile you are after (clean, dynamic or spectacular), we calculate the geometry of the wheel to reveal exactly that relief on your car. That is how a wheel becomes a genuinely sculpted mechanical part.
