Why a forged wheel (almost) never breaks
- Module: Forged or cast
- Level: Beginner
- Reading time: 4 min
A pothole you did not see. A kerb scraped a little too hard. Heavy braking in a corner. At moments like these, your wheels take enormous forces. And that is precisely where the whole difference between an ordinary wheel and a forged wheel shows.
Remember the previous lesson
You know it now: a cast wheel contains tiny pores, left behind by the liquid metal as it cooled. A forged wheel, for its part, is made of compressed material, without these internal weaknesses.
This invisible difference becomes crucial at the moment of impact.
The weak point of cast wheels: the crack
When a cast wheel takes a violent impact, these pores become points of weakness. The structure does not have the flexibility needed to absorb the energy.
The result: a cast wheel tends to crack or snap clean. It gives way, like a rigid object that fails all at once.
The strength of forged wheels: they bend before they break
A forged wheel reacts completely differently. Thanks to its aligned internal fibres, it has a precious quality: it deforms slightly before it breaks, instead of snapping clean.
Picture a dry twig and a green branch. The dry twig snaps at the slightest effort. The green branch, supple, bends without breaking. Forged is the green branch: it takes the hit, it absorbs, it holds.
In practice, where a cast wheel would crack on a big pothole, a forged one has a much better chance of coming through intact, or with just a mark.
Why it is a question of safety
Beyond your wallet, it is a matter of safety. A wheel that snaps clean at high speed is a real danger. A wheel that holds and, at worst, deforms leaves you in control.
That is why racing cars, subjected to the most extreme stresses, almost exclusively use forged wheels. When there is no room for error, forged is the choice.
Strength is not marketing
The strength of a forged wheel is not a sales argument: it is a direct consequence of how it is made. Aligned fibres, no pores. Physics does the rest.
In the next lesson, we answer the question everyone asks: if forged is so superior, why does it cost more, and why is it worth it?
The Onyx approach — Every Onyx Forged wheel is designed to take the real road, not just to shine when parked. The strength of forged wheels means peace of mind: that of driving on a part that protects your car, and protects you.
