Why forged is worth the price

Let us be direct: a forged wheel costs more than a cast wheel. Sometimes a lot more. That is a fact, and it deserves an honest explanation. Because the price is not a brand's whim: it reflects a reality of manufacturing, of material and of durability.

1. A more noble raw material

A forged wheel starts from a solid block of very high-quality aluminium, often an alloy also used in aviation. This material costs more than a standard aluminium intended for casting.

You do not start from a metal that is melted down: you start from a precious block that will be carved.

2. A far more demanding process

Forging requires machines able to apply a pressure of several thousand tonnes. These are heavy industrial machines, rare and costly.

Where casting is quick and simple (pour, wait, take out of the mould), forging is a long and precise process. The block is compressed, then machined with great precision to reveal the final design. Each step takes time, energy and real expertise.

3. A product that lasts

Here is the element that is often left out of the calculation: lifespan.

A cast wheel weakened by an impact may need replacing. A forged wheel comes through the years and the trials of the road. Over the long term, paying more once often works out cheaper than replacing several times.

That is the logic of any quality purchase: the well-made object costs more to buy, but less to use.

4. Made to measure: a one-off part

A high-end forged wheel is not a mass-produced item turned out by the thousand from the same mould. It can be made to measure: dimensions, design, finish, everything is adapted to your exact car.

You are not just paying for a wheel. You are paying for a part designed for you, made to last, and impossible to mistake for a standard production wheel.

The real meaning of the price

The price of a forged wheel tells a story: that of a noble material, a demanding process and, often, a made-to-measure creation.

It is not “expensive”. It is the fair price of an exceptional object designed to transform your car and stay with it for the long term.

You have finished the module on forged wheels. You now understand what sets them apart, why they hold up, and why they cost what they do. On to the next module: learning to read and understand a wheel's dimensions, to make the right choices.

The Onyx approach — At Onyx Forged, our promise is to make the exceptional accessible. Made-to-measure forged wheels, long reserved for the most unaffordable brands, are what we offer, without going through the traditional middlemen. The fair price of a genuinely exceptional part, without the extras you do not need.
