In short. "19-inch tyres" is not a size but a family. On the same 19-inch wheel, the sizes in our table run from 235/35 R19, a tyre 647 mm (25.5 in) tall with 82 mm of sidewall, to 255/55 R19, 763 mm (30.0 in) tall with 140 mm of sidewall. The only right size is one the car's manufacturer lists for your exact car: it is on the European document of conformity, the CoC (item 35), in the handbook and on the tyre placard, and on the sidewall of the tyres fitted when the car was new. On a UK price comparison site on 15 October 2026, the same summer performance tyre cost from £157 to £199 depending on the 19-inch size, and the same winter tyre cost 51 per cent more in 205/55 R19 than in 205/55 R16, with the same sidewall. No law requires winter tyres in Britain; abroad, countries read the marking on the tyre, not the wheel diameter, and the car's handbook says whether chains go on its 19-inch wheels.
How do you find the tyre size your car is built for?
Start with the manufacturer's list, not a catalogue. Three places give it:
| Where to look | What you read there | The limit |
|---|---|---|
| The European document of conformity (CoC) | Item 35: the tyre and wheel combinations, with others in the remarks (Regulation (EU) 2020/683, Annex VIII) | Your V5C logbook does not list tyre sizes |
| The handbook and the tyre placard (door pillar or fuel flap) | The sizes the maker lists and the pressure for each | Check against the CoC for your exact version |
| The sidewall of the tyre fitted | The full size, for example 235/40 R19 96Y, plus XL, M+S, the Alpine symbol | It does not tell you whether the tyre is original |
How to read the sidewall is in our guide to tyre sizes, load and speed index, and where the wheel sizes come from is in what size wheels fit my car. Two real examples show how narrow the list can be: Porsche's wheels and tyres list for the 911 (992) gives 235/40 ZR 19 at the front of the Carrera on 19-inch wheels (Porsche, bulletin 38/25), and Porsche's snow chain instructions for the Macan (95B) name 255/50 R19 on 19-inch winter or all-season wheels (Porsche, Macan). Same wheel diameter, 67 mm of difference in tyre height.
Which tyre sizes exist for 19-inch wheels?
The sidewall height is the width times the aspect ratio; the overall diameter is the wheel (19 × 25.4 = 482.6 mm) plus two sidewalls. These are nominal figures, calculated by our design office; a real tyre differs slightly by make. The listings column comes from one European online retailer (a French site) on 15 October 2026: it measures what is easy to find, not what sells, and UK stock will differ.
| Size | Sidewall | Overall diameter | Listings (one retailer) | of which winter |

Sidewall = width × aspect ratio; diameter = 482.6 mm + 2 sidewalls. Listings read on Mecazen on 15 October 2026; the same retailer listed 1,278 tyres in 205/55 R16, 368 of them winter.
Three things stand out. The 19-inch family covers two worlds: the 35 and 40 series, 647 to 687 mm tall, and the 50 and 55 series, 718 to 763 mm tall; that is up to 116 mm of difference on the same wheel diameter. Availability can vary fifteenfold between neighbouring sizes: 646 listings in 235/55 R19, 44 in 245/55 R19. And the best-stocked 19-inch size in this count had half the choice of a common 16-inch size at the same retailer.
How much sidewall is left on a 19-inch tyre?
The sidewall does not depend on the wheel diameter: 205/55 R16 and 205/55 R19 both have 112.8 mm. What grows is the whole wheel, from 631.9 to 708.1 mm, so the two are not interchangeable.
What the diameter changes is the share of sidewall at the same overall diameter. For a 235 mm tyre:
| Size | Sidewall | Overall diameter |
|---|---|---|
| 235/45 R18 | 105.8 mm | 668.7 mm |
| 235/40 R19 | 94.0 mm | 670.6 mm |
| 235/35 R20 | 82.2 mm | 672.5 mm |
One inch more wheel, one series less: the overall diameter stays within 2 mm and the sidewall loses 11.8 mm. That is why one model can list several wheel diameters at nearly the same overall diameter: at the front of the 911 Carrera, Porsche's list gives 235/40 ZR 19 and 245/35 ZR 20, which our calculation puts at 670.6 and 679.5 mm.
Keeping the overall diameter matters. UN Regulation 39 says the speed shown must never be less than the true speed (paragraph 5.3). Fit 235/45 R19 in place of 235/40 R19 and the tyre is 3.5 per cent taller: a speedometer that was exact before would show 50 mph at a true 51.75 mph. Our tyre size calculator gives the diameter and the speedometer difference for any two sizes; it compares, it does not choose for you.
Is a 19-inch tyre less comfortable?
At the same overall diameter, it tends to be, because the sidewall absorbs bumps before the suspension does. Two published tests observed this, though neither went up to 19 inches:
- ADAC, the German motoring club, compared four sizes listed for a Volkswagen Golf VII, from 195/65 R15 to 225/40 R18: the narrow tyres with taller sidewalls rode noticeably more comfortably (ADAC, page of 6 March 2025, 2020 analysis, in German).
- Auto Motor und Sport, on an Audi A3 and a Mercedes C-Class on 16, 17 and 18-inch wheels, found the loss of comfort on 18 inches noticeable but not serious (Auto Motor und Sport, 2014, in German).
Both tests changed width, and sometimes the tyre model, along with the diameter. We found no measured comfort test at 19 inches with the overall diameter held constant, so we give no figure. What the first table does show is that "19 inches" says nothing about comfort on its own: a 235/55 R19 keeps 129 mm of sidewall, a 235/35 R19 keeps 82.
Two practical points follow. A low sidewall puts the rim closer to the kerb and the pothole. And an XL tyre carries its load only at a higher pressure: in Continental's tables, a load index 94 XL tyre carries 595 kg at 2.5 bar and 670 kg at 2.9 bar (Continental data book). All nine summer sizes priced below are XL; set the pressure the car maker gives for that tyre, as explained in our tyre pressure guide. The weight of the wheel itself is another matter: see unsprung weight explained.
How much does a 19-inch tyre cost in the UK?
The same summer performance tyre from one premium maker, lowest listed price on a UK price comparison site, delivered, before fitting, on 15 October 2026:
| Size | Lowest listed price |
|---|---|
| 235/35 R19 91Y XL | £157 |
| 255/35 R19 96Y XL | £166 |
| 225/40 R19 93Y XL | £168 |
| 225/45 R19 96Y XL | £171 |
| 245/40 R19 98Y XL | £173 |
| 235/40 R19 96Y XL | £177 |
| 235/45 R19 99Y XL | £177 |
| 255/40 R19 100Y XL | £180 |
| 245/45 R19 102Y XL | £199 |
On the same wheel diameter, the price of one tyre varied by 26.8 per cent with the size, and it followed neither the width nor the series: the lowest-profile size, 235/35 R19, was the cheapest that day. To compare two sizes, compare the exact tyre in each, not "a 19-inch tyre".
The wheel diameter itself costs money. The same winter tyre, same width and series, so the same 112.8 mm sidewall, was listed the same day at £111 in 205/55 R16 91H and £168 in 205/55 R19 97H XL, 51 per cent more. The two do not share a diameter or a load index: they are tyres for two different cars, compared here only on price.
Prices move daily; this is a dated order of magnitude, per tyre, before fitting, balancing and valves.
Winter tyres on 19-inch wheels: what to check
Whether you need them
No law requires winter tyres in Britain, as Michelin UK also notes, and the tyre section of the MOT manual does not mention them; the details and the timing are in our UK winter tyres guide. Abroad, the rules read the tyre's marking, not the wheel diameter: Germany defines a winter tyre by the Alpine symbol (StVZO, section 36, in German), and M+S alone no longer counts there. A 19-inch all-season tyre counts as a winter tyre in those countries only if it carries the Alpine symbol.
The price and the choice
On the same comparison site, the same day, the same maker's winter performance tyre was listed at £191 in 235/40 R19 96W, £243 in 235/35 R19 91W and £244 in 245/45 R19 102V. Against the summer tyre above, that is 7.9 per cent more in 235/40 R19, 22.6 per cent more in 245/45 R19 and 54.8 per cent more in 235/35 R19. Two different models; the gap holds for them only. In the European listing count above, winter tyres were 18 per cent of the choice in 245/55 R19 and 38 per cent in 255/45 R19: check the offer in your exact size before choosing between a winter set and all-season tyres.
The speed rating
A winter tyre may carry a lower speed symbol than the car's summer tyre. Germany allows it with a label in the driver's view showing the limit (StVZO, section 36), and Michelin UK describes the same label (Michelin UK). In the MOT manual, a tyre whose load capacity or speed rating is not in accordance with the minimum requirements is a major defect, a load capacity insufficient for the weight on the axle is dangerous, and different sizes on the same axle are major (MOT manual, 5.2.3). Two caveats on those MOT entries: the manual has testers check load and speed ratings only on Class 5 and Class 7 vehicles, not on ordinary cars, while different sizes on the same axle are a defect for every class. The MOT not checking a rating does not make a lower one acceptable: keep the load index at least at the car maker's figure, winter or not.
A smaller wheel for winter
Some car makers list a smaller winter wheel: Porsche's chain instructions for the Macan name 18-inch winter wheels alongside 19-inch ones. The CoC and the handbook say whether yours has one. A smaller wheel must still clear the brakes: brake caliper clearance explains why some cars cannot take the smaller diameter. A second set has to be stored: see how to store tyres and wheels between seasons. If the wheels carry pressure sensors, read MOT, TPMS and aftermarket wheels.
Snow chains on 19-inch wheels
The tyre size is not enough: the handbook says which axle and which wheels take chains. Two examples read on 15 October 2026:
| Car | What the maker says |
|---|---|
| Porsche Macan (95B) | Chains on the rear axle only, with winter or all-season wheels of 18 inches (255/55 R18) or 19 inches (255/50 R19); none allowed on 20 and 21 inches; 50 km/h at most (Porsche) |
| Tesla Model 3 (Australian manual) | One chain model per wheel size, 18, 19 and 20 inches; rear wheels only; never on summer tyres; 48 km/h at most (Tesla) |
Our guide to snow chains and snow socks covers the country rules and how to measure the clearance.
The method, in six steps
This guide recommends no size: yours depends on the car the wheels are fitted to. The method is the same for everyone.
- Read the original size on the CoC (item 35 and remarks), the handbook or placard, and the sidewall: width, series, diameter, load index, speed symbol, XL if marked.
- Check the wheel takes it: diameter, and a wheel width within the range the tyre maker publishes for that size. Ask the fitter if in doubt; how to choose aftermarket wheels explains the wheel's numbers.
- If you change size, stay within the sizes the maker lists and keep the overall diameter; the tyre size calculator does the arithmetic.
- Keep the load index and speed symbol at least equal to the maker's figures, apart from the winter speed label described above.
- Compare price and stock in the exact size, summer, winter and all-season: the counts above show up to fifteen times more choice from one size to the next.
- Set the pressure to the car maker's figure for that tyre, XL included, and read the handbook before buying chains.
Common mistakes
| Mistake | Why it is a problem | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Shopping for "a 19-inch tyre" | Sixteen sizes in our table, from 647 to 763 mm tall | Design office calculation |
| Assuming 19 inches always means a low sidewall | 235/55 R19 keeps 129 mm, more than 205/55 R16 | Design office calculation |
| Fitting a taller size without checking | 3.5 per cent taller and the speedometer reads below true speed | UN Regulation 39, 5.3 |
| A load index or speed rating below the car maker's figure | The tyre may not carry the car's load or speed; for Class 5 and 7 vehicles the MOT manual makes it a major defect, dangerous if the load capacity is too low for the axle weight | MOT manual 5.2.3 |
| Two sizes on the same axle | A major MOT defect | MOT manual 5.2.3 |
| Inflating an XL tyre like a standard one | It carries its load only at a higher pressure | Continental |
| Buying chains on wheel diameter alone | The handbook can rule out an axle or a wheel size | Porsche; Tesla |

Frequently asked questions
What are the most common 19-inch tyre sizes?
In our count of one European retailer's listings on 15 October 2026, the best-stocked were 235/55 R19 (646 listings), 255/50 R19 (447) and 245/45 R19 (433). That measures stock at one retailer, not sales, and says nothing about which fits your car.
Can any 19-inch tyre go on any 19-inch wheel?
No. The size must be one the car maker lists, and the wheel width must suit the tyre width. Between 235/35 R19 and 255/55 R19 the tyre height changes by 116 mm.
Are 19-inch tyres more expensive than 16 or 17-inch ones?
In the example we priced, yes: the same winter tyre was £111 in 205/55 R16 and £168 in 205/55 R19 on 15 October 2026. Within 19 inches, the same summer tyre still varied by 26.8 per cent between sizes.
Are 19-inch wheels uncomfortable?
It depends on the series. At the same overall diameter, one more inch of wheel takes about 12 mm off the sidewall, and the ADAC and Auto Motor und Sport tests found taller sidewalls more comfortable. But a 235/55 R19 has more sidewall than a 225/40 R18.
Should I go down to 18 inches for winter?
It is not required in Britain. It is possible only if the car maker lists the smaller size and the brakes clear the wheel; compare the price and stock of both sizes.
Do all-season 19-inch tyres count as winter tyres in Europe?
Only if they carry the Alpine symbol (3PMSF); M+S alone is not enough in Germany.
Can I fit snow chains to 19-inch wheels?
It depends on the car: Porsche allows them on the rear of the Macan on 19 inches, Tesla gives one chain model per wheel size for the Model 3. Your handbook decides.
What does 235/40 R19 mean?
A tyre 235 mm wide, with a sidewall 40 per cent of that width (94 mm), radial, for a 19-inch wheel; 670.6 mm (26.4 in) tall overall.
